Building Britain’s Canals – 25 November 2020 – 25/11/2020 – Wednesday – SBS

Historian Dan Jones travels to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in the north of England, Britain’s longest canal built by just one company. 127 miles long, it was a 19th Century superhighway. Rising 500 feet above sea level, it’s one of the great achievements of the industrial age. Linking the economically booming counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire, it’s a story of the industrial revolution. The canal ferried coal and cotton to the mills and factories of the industrial north from Liverpool, transforming the fortunes of Yorkshire and Lancashire.
