Ancient Metropolis 6 February 2022: Sunday on SBS

Chichen Itza is the last great vestige of Maya domination in Mesoamerica, yet no one knows the precise origins of the city. What is certain is that in the 10th century, it was the most powerful city in the region.

When you first see Teotihuacan, its size and grandeur are immediately striking, an impression the Aztecs must have also had when they rediscovered the city in the 14th century.

Tikal is one of the most sumptuous Mayan city-states, with its pyramid temples built in a matter of years and its legendary kings. Set deep in the jungle of Petén, Guatemala, Tikal dominated Mayan civilisation for centuries.
